I may have mentioned this before: Teadora and I go to the library every week. She gets at least one story before bedtime, and I like to read a different book each night. I started this routine when she was about 5 weeks old, so you can imagine how many children’s books we’ve read!

When a book is particularly good, I write it down on a list. Then if we get a gift certificate or some extra cash, I have a reference for which books I’d like to purchase for Tea’s personal library.

My favorite book we’ve come across?

“A Bear and His Boy” by Sean Bryan.

The story is about a very busy bear who wakes up one morning with a boy on his back. He takes the boy through his rigorous “to do” list, which has him running all over town, doing one thing after the next. At his busiest, the boy convinces him to stop and smell the lilacs, reinforcing the art of slowing down and appreciating the simple pleasures in life.

Such a cute premise with a touch of humor and an important theme. The illustrations are simple and catchy as well. I really recommend it, if you’re looking for a gift or an addition to your own collection.

Today was so awesome. Seriously. The best day I’ve had in a long time.

I’ve been waiting for a year and a half to say this: The Department of Special Education Resource Center is officially open! I had my doubts it would ever come to fruition, but here it is. My baby. My library. Take a look at her splendor.

Everything in its proper place. Everything set up. Signs. Seating. Catalog. Shelves. It has come together better than we’d hoped.

Here’s another angle:

My husband helped to hang those signs last week. It was a pretty big deal. Doesn’t it just look more professional? Like those shelves were meant to be there?

And yes, did notice the stash of treats on the tables? Homemade. To celebrate the big day. Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies. Snickerdoodles. Orange Vanilla Cream Whoopie Pies. Buckeyes (chocolate covered peanut butter balls). Chocolate Chip Cookies. Grapes. Strawberries. Brain juice. We had it all.

The best part of the day was actually the faculty meeting. I was given about 20 minutes to announce the opening of the library and give a brief tutorial on the catalog system I spent the whole summer putting together. And if I do say so myself, I think people were in shock and awe. Mouths were literally gaping open.

I mean, think about what the department had for a library until now. A couple of shelves. In the back of an office. Nothing sorted. Pieces missing. No list of materials. No space. No records. Essentially nothing. And now we have an entire system that has not only a list of items, but also a way of searching, reserving, and tracking over 600 new and old materials. We have color coding. We have scanners. We have access. We have organization. You’d be surprised too. Especially since this project has taken such a long time without a lot to show until the last few weeks of the summer.

I think it just blew everyone’s expectations out of the water. Including my own.

Plus, I managed to get through the tutorial without blushing beat red. And without hives. This is BIG.

We had an open house too. A healthy handful of people came by to see all the fuss. It was so wonderful to show people around and explain the details of the library. To tell them how awesome this will be for our department. To prove to them it can be done.

And they didn’t mind the treats either.

But I think what made this day so great was the overall sense of accomplishment we all felt. To work on something so long—with so many decisions and so much research and so many hours of labor—and finally see people appreciating its value was so entirely rewarding. This is a true corporate library. I feel like a burden is lifted. Like I am actually doing what I want to be doing. And really? It’s a relief—pure relief—to know it all worked out. It’s functional. It’s dynamic. It’s creative. And it’s the real thing.

What’s next? Marketing. Maintaining. And maybe some class visitations over the next couple weeks for more tutorials. Exciting isn’t it?

One more picture. Here’s me and my baby, standing beside my other baby. I am happy.

This post is not about pregnancy or babies or nausea or food.

WHAT?! Is that even possible?

That’s right, friends—I have a life outside of imminent motherhood! Let’s take a moment to rejoice in this brief relapse into the world that doesn’t revolve around my expanding belly. Because I know it seems like the only thing I talk about these days. But I think about other stuff, you know.

Like libraries and stuff.

Don’t sigh at me. This is important.

Two evenings ago, I was having a hot flash so Brandon went around to open up the house and get some air flowing. At the front door, there was a small package waiting. For me. From the University of Hawaii. I wasn’t expecting anything, but quickly realized it must be a long lost package from last May. As in May 15, 2010. As in the day I graduated from my master’s program.

I started jumping and dancing in place as I pulled out my diploma. It looks like this:

It took a while to get here because they spelled my middle name wrong on the first one. Nice. But it doesn’t matter now because I am an official graduate. I have closure. HOORAY.

But that’s not the only reason I celebrated on Tuesday night. Remember my library? The one I’ve been building for our department? The one that has taken a year and a half to get going? Yeah. It’s almost done.

On Tuesday afternoon, I finished cataloging all the items in the resource center. Assessments. Instructional aids. Toys. Videos. Books. Everything. There are about 600 items in our catalog now, readily available with all the details you could possibly need to look up. It took me every day since May 25 to do it, but it’s done. And the catalog works awesomely, if I do say so myself.

Everything else is in place. The labels, the barcodes, the color coding. Even our furniture came in. All we’re waiting on now is a couple of signs and BAM!—the library is done. DONE. Can you believe it? After all this time and effort, all I have left is to upload the catalog to our faculty computers, give a brief tutorial at a faculty meeting—and that’s it.

Wow. I mean, this is a big step in my library career. I’m not just building a library. I’m managing a library. I’ve been focusing on it for so long, it hardly seems possible that we’re actually opening our doors. Excuse me while I wipe away the happy tears…

Did I mention all it takes is one scan from the barcode scanner and an item is checked out? You’d think that would be hardly worth mentioning, but it took a year and a half of research, prep work, and frustration to make it that easy. It also makes a neat beeping sound. Ahem.

We open on August 16, 2010. But I already celebrated with red velvet cheesecake on Tuesday. Because I’d say Tuesday was a great day for library.

Yesterday was back to work. After a few conversations with co-workers, I got the general feeling spring break was short and not quite as productive as we all hoped. It’s just long enough to let go of all the anxieties and worries that plague us day by day, but by the time we finally let ourselves go, it’s already time to head back to the grind.

At least I got to come back to my library. It eases the pain of a spent vacation if you can return to something you love, am I right? I was particularly excited because I was expecting a box to be delivered from a major library supplies company. Labels. I got me some labels! And label covers. And shelf magnets to designate topics. And due date slips. It all shipped to the office. Like Christmas morning or something.

And you know what else? A doctoral student came into the office to ask about assessment tests to borrow. And normally I’d have to wish him luck and show him how to jump into the pile of unrelated materials. But now? I got to show off my new organization system that allows the patrons to find what they need by topic. I don’t want to brag—but it’s awesome.

He actually selected two of the materials I recommended! I got to pull out two fresh due date slips, plug in the numbers on my date stamp, and listen to the beautiful sound of the ink hitting the paper. I actually stamped a book yesterday. Doesn’t that bring tears to your eyes? Joyful tears, to be sure. Joyful tears.

And I’m certain some of you could not possibly imagine looking forward to heading back to a job like this. Organizing? Stamping? Labeling? No thanks. But you know what? That’s okay. It’s not for everybody.

I like it. And isn’t that the point? To find something you want to do with your life? To be happy knowing you’re where you’re supposed to be? To find enjoyment even in the mundane details because it serves a greater purpose?

I hope you too are happy where you are, friends.

A package showed up at my door Saturday morning addressed to the “Master Librarian, Carrie Consalvi.” It was from someone in Los Angeles named Brigette B. The envelope had a big blue heart sticker for a seal. What could it be? I just went to my first American Library Association workshop a couple weeks ago, maybe it was copies of the materials? But I couldn’t really see the ALA sealing the envelope with a cutesy heart. But who is this person? What could it be?

I tore it open. Pulled out the thick paper inside. And found this staring back at me.

A naked woman of the paper sort. But not just any naked paper woman. Miss Librarian. The Miss Librarian I twittered something about a week or so ago when I was wishing I could still play with paper dolls. And here she is. Just waiting to be clothed.

She has friends, too. An owl, because owls stand for wisdom. And that’s what Librarians are full of. Among other things.

And a cat. Because Librarians must be cat people. But Miss Librarian is hopefully not a “cat lady,” because that just plays into the tight bun, polyester skirt, shush-at-all-costs librarian stereotype to which we all gravitate. And excuse me but that cat’s bum is right on the cover of the book. Right where you’d hold it in your hands. Gross.

But we all know the most wonderful part about a paper doll is the clothes. The vast assortment of a perfectly-posed, fully-tabbed wardrobe. And believe me, this librarian is entirely fashionable. For instance, check out her work attire. A splash of feminine purples and pinks in a high color blouse paired with a navy blue pencil skirt. And for a pop of color? Fluorescent pink heals, of course. Complete with a matching assortment of books.

And we mustn’t forget her mildly sexy, entirely sensual poetry outfit? Horizontal stripes to accentuate the bust and offset the dark contrast of the black, form fitting leggings. Very curvy. Very artsy.

And have you noticed the shoes? Am I allowed to be jealous of a paper doll? Stiletto heals with rosy pompoms. Nice.

Aside from the 7-year-year old Barbie loving, Little Mermaid wanna-be girl rejoicing inside me, I really want to share my enthusiasm over this artwork. Because it truly is lovely. I initially thought the doll was cute and creative and librariany and possibly looked a little bit like me minus the pencil thin waste and ginormous boobs. But up close? Fine detail. Great texture. Excellent archival quality. Better than any of the paper dolls I had as a kid. This is really exceptional work.

Brigette B.? You do very well for yourself.

And so I ask you, who? Who would have given me this thoughtful gift?

At first I thought it was my co-worker. Cheerful Vanessa. She was with me when I first discovered Miss Librarian and promptly told me she was going to buy it for me if I didn’t order it right then and there. But when I went to thank her this morning?

“Wait, why are you thanking me? Do you know who sent it to you? It wasn’t me. I was waiting to see if your husband would buy it for you.”

Hmm. Not Cheerful Vanessa? Maybe she’s right. Maybe my husband was being sneaky. He lives to be sneaky. But when I called him up?

“I didn’t buy it. I totally would have taken credit for it if I had. It’s a good gift. Maybe it was Marly.”

Hmm. Not my sweet husband? This is a mystery! But maybe he’s right. My boss—my friend, Thoughtful Marly is generous to a fault. She also shares an extreme fondness for all things Etsy. I wouldn’t be surprised if she bought it for me. But when I asked her?

“It wasn’t me. Glad somebody got it for you though. It’s so cute! It wasn’t your husband? What about your mom?”

Oh yes. My mother—of course! Why didn’t I think of her? The original person who supplied my love for paper and dolls and art. And how she loves to indulge my librarianess! It was almost too obvious. When I called her up last night, she chuckled a little to herself.

“Would your mother be the sort to buy you paper dolls when you’re 26 years old?”

“Yes. But how did you know?”

“You posted it on your Twitter.”

“I didn’t know you followed me.”

“Oh Carrie, don’t forget I’m your mother. I cherish every little word you write.”

The mystery is solved. Please excuse me. I may or may not have a half naked-librarian that needs help dressing herself up.

And if my husband is reading this, please don’t read too much into that last statement.

(If you missed Part I of the library reconfiguration, please visit “The Library is Realized. Nearly.” You’ll be glad you did. I’m pretty sure.)

I wasn’t sure I wanted to show you this just yet. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not sure I’ve ever been more excited to wake up for work in the morning. This is my project! My baby. And I love it so much.

Just yesterday I walked over to the main office and purposely stopped to talk to a faculty member so I could accidentally slip in an invitation to see the new digs. And every time someone steps into the building, I get to say, “Welcome to the Resource Center,” and then I show them each shelf and tell them what organization I’m planning and how the office was changed and how I’m a real librarian—whether they want the official tour or not. And I caught myself beaming with pride when one of my co-workers gave a quick tour to her student and said, “Look how much space we have now!”

I’m totally in love with this library. Is that even possible?

But there is still so much to do. Sure, the office is running and functional, but the library is just taking its first big-girl steps. The materials are all on the shelves, but there is no organization whatsoever. It was mostly just to get them off the floor temporarily. I can’t wait to get in my labels and assessment cases so I can start tackling the shelves.

Which is why I hesitated to show you this. I wanted the reveal to be just perfect. Everything lined up in a perfect row. All items exactly in there rightful place. Floor vacuumed. Boxes put away. Papers filed. But I’m learning projects rarely keep the timeline I painstakingly plan.

So.

I just couldn’t wait anymore to show you. I’m too proud. Too thrilled. Too consumed not to share this with you—perfectly set up or not. Let’s just consider this the “almost there” phase, okay?

Ready?

Bum pra da dum bum, TA DUM! (A drum roll—could you tell? It’s rhythmic. Composed by Carrie Consalvi. All rights reserved.):

This is the entry way as you step into the building. The shot is taken from the front door looking right. Previously, it was my humble cubicle. Now? Open library space. Also, a perfect view of the unorganized goods—assessments, instructional aids, textbooks, toys. You get the picture. Doesn’t the room look brighter? Or is that just me?

As you turn the corner, you used to find a hallway with more cubicles and a vacuum from the 1950′s. Not very inviting is it? But now? Now you see me. At my new desk. Which has been opened up like a reception area so I can see the scope of the land, the pride and joy of the office, the nooks and crannies of my legacy.

As we finish up this brief “before and after,” I want to show you once again what the library used to be: an afterthought, cooped up in the back of the office, trapped with the supplies. See how one of the shelves is barely accessible behind the copier? See how little room, how little light, how little care these precious materials received? Well not anymore. There is room to breath! Room to spread out! To feel the brightness of the sun. To be treated like a library should be treated.

There’s one side of the wall that I didn’t bother take a “before” picture. It was literally just a panel of cubicle fabric. But I’d like to show you what we’ve done with it. We had some leftover shelves and tables from the reconfiguration, so I got this idea. Why don’t we set up a standing work station for patrons who want to come in and search the resource center catalog? Or even the Internet? It would make it more like a real library. So that’s what we did.

Doesn’t it look official? Inviting? Wouldn’t you stand there to look up something libraryish? On a side note: please notice the candy bowl, package of whoppers, and package of gum. This is the demise we spoke of yesterday. Please also notice the bowl is nearly empty. Sigh.

And then there’s my little office. Kinda clean. Kinda messy. Perfect analogy for my life.

There you have it! My library. My wonderfully, exciting library to go with my thrilling, new profession. Isn’t it perfect? Just think how great this will be when everything is organized. I can’t wait to update you in a couple months.

So what do you think?

I touched a spider yesterday. And killed at least 6 others. There may have also been a weird black flying cricket that got caught in the crossfire. And my clothes had enough cobwebs for me to continually checking my body for creeping little buggers. If you’re wondering, yes, I did do the heebie-jeebie dance more than once. A few shudders. A few squeals.

What’s with the bugs?

It’s so kind of you to ask! We are reconfiguring our little office at work. And when you start pulling out things in a tropical climate that have been in storage at least 3 years—more likely 7 or 8 years—buggers are bound to flood out. Think Indiana Jones when the girl has to put her hand in the hole to pull the lever to stop the spikes from killing Indie and the kid. It was exactly that bad.

There are rumors our office is haunted nightly by cockroaches the size of your fist.

Blink.

Until yesterday, this first little cubicle as you walk into the office was my second home. Are you looking at the mess? Please don’t. It’s not my fault, I’ve just been busy. It’s been a good little cubicle for me these past almost 3 years. I’ve put up a few pictures. Killed a few plants. Completed countless bouts of travel paperwork. I’ve made a name for myself in this little cubicle.

We are an office full of cubicles. Rows and rows of cubicles. And I secretly really like the cubicle structure. It’s a semblance of privacy with the benefit of instant communication with coworkers across the room. We keep tabs on people and mind our own business at the same time. It’s our own little cubicle community. A sometimes lively community.

But you know what cubicles are not good for? Libraries. Because libraries need open space. So today we’re fixing that problem. Because that’s what we do here at the office. Fix problems. See those cubicles? We’re knocking two of them out and reconstructing them in the back of the office. But it will give us just enough room to house our Resource Center.

The Resource Center I’ve been working on for just over a year now.

Did you hear that? It’s finally coming together. We’ve been trying to reconfigure the office since August. We’ve gone slow. Careful. And we’re finally ready. Ready for the library. My library. We’ll have space for the shelves. Space for studying. A new office for the librarian (ie. me).

Insert jumping and flailing and obnoxious smiling here.

You see, I’m pretty excited. Until now, organization has been a problem. Mostly due to a lack of space. The Resource Center pretty much looks like this:

Shelves of wonderful materials that are begging for a better home than the back of our office. And in just a few short hours, I’ll get to give it to them.

Organization. Sweet music to my ears.

And that’s why I was willing to face those little buggers head on. We came prepared, tennis shoes, vacuum cleaners, and antibacterial hand soap. Every cabinet, every drawer, every shelf was packed up, boxed up, and moved out. No corner was left untouched.

And now? We wait. We patiently wait while the contracted labor fulfills this pursuit for library excellence. As of today, I have a library to call my own.

Why yes, thank you for asking. I will be showing you a follow up of the reconfiguration when it’s finished. How could I not show you the library after all this?

For the last three years, I’ve been stuffing my head with books filled with words like “interface” and “Boolean” and “metadata.” You know, academic books—or “monographs” as we librarians like to call them. But sometimes I read books for fun. Mostly on holidays and long weekends. Which is really a shame because fun books have sentences like, “There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it” and, “The sun shone, having no alternative, on the nothing new.”

Academia knows how to stifle potentially wonderful sentences, doesn’t it?

About this time last year, I decided I’d had enough of mundane scholarly articles and forced myself to dive into the world of fiction. This one particular fun book caught my eye because of it’s gruesome title.

My Hands Came Away Red.

Scary right? Sounds like mystery. And murder. And tragedy. Normally I would have passed without a second thought. Because, well, I’m a sissy. I have a strict no-gore, no-scare policy. I still sleep with a night light, readers. There’s no way I’m reading creepy, bloody things. But I found it in the Christian Fiction section. And Christian Fiction isn’t really gruesome. It’s just a fact. So I glanced at the back briefly and decided just to trust my gut and take it home.

I didn’t leave the couch for the next 5 hours.

It’s a story about a girl. A girl who decides to take a break from her complicated love life to help build a church for a small village in Indonesia. Just when they’re about finished with the construction, violent conflict erupts between the Christians and the Muslims. Mass murder. Blood. Fire. And six stranded teenagers who flee into the jungle for escape. They fight discouragement. Anger. Starvation. Malaria. Fear. Doubt. Murderers. And must find a way home without getting killed in the process.

Normally, I’m not much of a Christian fiction fan. But Lisa McKay does a really good job portraying truth and realism without spoon feeding the gospel in a couple of cheesy paragraphs. It’s refreshing. She handles faith as a central theme of the story, but it’s not overwhelming. The novel seems most appropriate for teens, but her sentences are so engaging and thoughtful, I’d recommend it for older crowds as well. Inspiring.

So inspiring, I actually wrote the author an e-mail. I’ve been alive 26 years, and how many books have I read? I’ve never once written to an author. But something made me do it. I told her how much I appreciated her sentence structure. Her themes. Her flow. I told her it made me want to turn back to the pages of my own unwritten novel. But I never expected her to write back.

Two months later, she did. And this is what she said:

Hi Carrie,

I’m sorry for the delay in reply. I got married in Australia in January, and spent two months away from California. When you wrote I was on honeymoon in New Zealand. What a wonderful season of life.

So, getting back to normal life now. I’ve been back three weeks, and my husband, Mike, has been back in Papua New Guinea (where he was when we met) for two of those! He took a short term contract with Oxfam. So it’s been an unusual start to married life, that’s for sure. But I’ve been using the time to do some writing, which is good! That and answering some email.

Thanks so much for writing to tell me you enjoyed the book, that’s fabulous, and needed encouragement to keep working on the project I’m plugging away with at the moment! I hope your own writing is going well.

All the best,
Lisa

I couldn’t believe how personal this e-mail sounded. Married? Honeymoon? Work? It’s like we’ve known each other for years and she was catching me up on her life. I immediately found so much respect for her as a writer because she took the time to respond to me. Me. Some random girl across the Internet who tripped over her book. And I provided her encouragement? What a beautiful thought.

I learned later that much of her book was based on personal experience in her travels and missions. Although it’s fiction, it’s based on real conflict and real experiences. Which is probably why the writing is so vivid. So captivating.

It’s this kind of fun book that makes me want to write. I’ve been practicing. Trying to get sentences to flow out my fingers. But I think in order to write well, you have to read well. And now that I’m almost done with academia, I should have more time for books like this.

There you have it. My first official recommendation on Sunday Book Club.

Also, my first official recommendation as a Librarian. Which means you should probably read it.

It’s over! It’s over! Oral comps is finally over!

Sure, I was a virtual wreck this morning. A couple cries. A few hyperventilations. A stomach so squirrely I couldn’t eat before the test. But I did some deep breathing exercises. I went for a walk. I prayed with my husband. I prayed with my friend. And you know what? I finally got it together at the last minute, found confidence, and managed to pull it off.

Did you hear that? I PASSED! It’s finished. I can actually graduate. I can actually get my masters. Excuse me while I do a little happy jig in the parking lot.

You want to hear about the actual test? Well, it was pretty much exactly as I practiced. I showed up about 15 minutes early and had to feel my stomach churning while I waited in the lobby area. The two faculty members on my review board where a bit late because they were rushing from another meeting. They started the introductions and explaining the format before we even entered the conference room. Which caught me off guard. But I tried to stay calm.

As soon as we sat down, they pretty much expected me to roll right in. I spilled out my first response. Fluid. Articulate. A few shakes, but mostly coherent. No interruptions. No follow up questions. I tried to keep my hands under the table so they couldn’t see me shaking. Rolled right into the second question. Noticed my advisor nodding and smiling at all the appropriate cues. The other faculty member? Dead pan. No emotion, no smile, no nods. He just sat there staring at me intently.

I only wanted to throw up once or twice.

But it went really fast. After each question, they were encouraging with praising my arguments or telling me where I could find supporting research. The only issue was my third question. I gave my 8 minute response, but when I stopped, the emotionless professor said, “May I see a set of questions?”

Excuse me, what? Did I do it wrong? Did I not answer the question? Am I going to fail now?

But the other faculty member came to the rescue, “She just answered it a little differently. It’s a fresh perspective on the question.”

And that’s about it. They asked me to leave the conference room so they could compare notes. I barely had enough time to take a breath, and they were already calling me back inside.

“Excellent arguments. Congratulations, you’ve passed.”

Sweet, sweet words.

Oh, and get this: “I’m not sure why you mentioned wanting to work on assertiveness training. You presented yourself professionally and didn’t show any nervousness in tonality.” Can you believe that? It was from the dead pan professor. I could hardly believe my ears.

The only critique? Word choice. I latched on to the words “materials” and “purpose” a few too many times.

Oh and one other thing. My advisor told me it would have been better not to chew gum during the presentation. Except I wasn’t chewing gum. That smacking sound? Yea, it was my mouth sticking to itself. I was nervous, okay? Plus I was talking a lot. I didn’t have any water.

Embarrassing? Yes.

But I don’t care much. Because I passed. I actually passed.

And readers? Thank you. Thank you for your faithfulness during this crazy season. If you need me, I’ll be off doing nothing. Nothing at all.

So today’s the day. At 1:00 p.m. (HST), I’ll be going in for my oral comprehensive examination. I’ve studied, I’ve practiced, I’ve prepared. There’s nothing left for me to do.

(Except throw up.)

I’m taking today slow. I’ll go for a walk. Try to relax. Take it one step at a time.

But could you do something for me? Just one little thing?

Pray.

Pray. Pray. Pray.

I need the words that come out of my mouth to be articulate. I need to be confident. I need to present myself like a professional. I know the material, but I’ve got to make the connection from my mind to my mouth—and honestly, that doesn’t always happen.

And thank you, dear readers. You’ve been more than supportive through this process. I’m certain you’re as sick of reading about comps as I am of preparing for them. Just know you’ve been so helpful in calming me down, keeping me sane, encouraging me. What would I do without you?

Okay.

When you hear from me again, this will all be over. I plan to post the results of my test tonight. See you on the other side!
